Perspex acrylic screens – fast becoming known as sneeze screens – are now a feature of our lives and are likely to be so for some time. We are getting used to living with COVID, and the security measures put in place, and customers are becoming more familiar with protective screens in many settings.
It takes something like a pandemic to demonstrate how vulnerable we are, and show us how we can keep safer with a few simple changes in society like social distancing and widespread use of plastic shielding. But do all companies need to use protective screens, and is it always appropriate?
It has to be said that shielding should almost always be a feature where companies have a public facing element, as these will help keep both customers and business partners safe, but are they also likely to figure in other areas where people congregate, such as office spaces and social situations?
The huge advantage of protective screens is that they are completely impermeable to any virus and are will help to prevent infection between people. While face coverings can reduce the possibility of infection, they’re not as secure as a polycarbonate screens and it is that certainty that has allowed shops and other public areas to reopen to the public.
However, under current shopping situations it is not usually possible to have fully fitted screens as transactions usually require the passing of paid for goods, and that requires a small section cut out of the screen, depending upon the size of the thing being passed through. That reduces the integrity of the screen.
Long term solutions – since this isn’t going away – could involve fully-shielded pay stations and automated collection points, but in the short term, and possibly for many years, localised screens at the pay point are going to become the new normal. How our society evolves from there is still unknown, but more permanent solutions are likely.
So, Perspex acrylic screens with letterbox delivery cut-outs are a good solution for consumer environments, but where else might these become essential? As already discussed, office areas may already be sufficiently socially distanced to not require fixtures such as this, but even offices have visitors. Clients and salespeople are regular visitors to many businesses and carry the same risks as consumers in shops, so office meeting areas are also relevant for protective screens. Hospitals, care homes, pubs and clubs, and restaurants are also going to need to review how people congregate and how best to protect them.
